The best way to maintain your drainage system and keep it free of major issues is through prevention. If you are careful about what goes down your drain, then you probably won’t have nasty clogs in your drains very often.

To keep your drains in good condition and to keep them from clogging, it is important to keep them as clean as possible. Remember that keeping your drains free of debris is just as important as keeping your kitchen and bathroom floors clean!

There are some drains that need more regular upkeep than others. The drains in your bathtub and bathrooms sink in particular are prone to clogs because they frequently have hair, soap suds, and toothpaste that can build up and start to cause problems. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your drainage system running smoothly.

The following are our top five tips for maintaining a healthy drainage system.

  • Use drain guards.

If you want to maintain a healthy drainage system, one of the simplest things you can do is to use drain guards. Drain guards are metal or mesh covers that allow water to go down the drain but not larger articles such as food crumbs or hairs.

Remember that products like cooking oil should never be disposed of by putting them down the drain.

  • Use drain cleaner to clear drains.

Every few months, your drains will benefit from the use of bacteriological drain cleaner. The way to use these is by pouring the solution down the drain and leaving to sit (this is usually for 30 minutes, but use the directions on the bottle). Follow up by running hot water down the drain.

We recommend that you find a drain cleaning product that is as natural as possible as this will be gentler on your pipes.

  • Pour boiling water down your drains.

Once a week, it is a good idea to wash out your drains using boiling water. Hot water will help to dissolve any fats and oils that may have inadvertently went down the drain and keep residue from building up.  The Vinegar and Baking Soda may also help with unclogging your sinks.

  • Garbage disposal

If you have a garbage disposal, it is important to remember to clean it at least once a month. One trick that will help to keep your garbage disposal clean is to grind up two cups of ice cubes along with some salt. This helps to cut through the grease that can accumulate over time.

Once you have flushed out your garbage disposal with cold water, try adding a lemon or lime to help get rid of the stinky smell!
