You know the telltale signs: sink water draining a bit slower than normal, and water collecting at your feet in the shower. Perhaps you’ve been ignoring the signs for a while, but ignoring a clogged drain eventually becomes impossible! Follow our tips below to learn how to unclog your drain yourself at home!

Using Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you don’t have a full blockage, a home remedy of baking soda and vinegar may work to unclog your drain. Although it may not work on difficult clogs, using this method is a great way to simply flush the blocked contents away…thereby avoiding seeing what caused the actual clog!

This method can be attempted by following the steps below:

  1. Slowly pour the contents of a pot of boiled water down the drain. Be sure to leave one cup of the boiled water in the pot for later use.
  2. Right away, pour in 1/3 cup of baking soda and let it sit for five minutes.
  3. Mix one cup of vinegar into the boiled water that was left in the pot. Pour this mixture through the drain, and be prepared for it to fizz immediately. Wait 20 minutes.
  4. Boil an additional pot of water. Use this water to flush the mixture down the drain.

Other Methods to Unclog Your Drain

Other than using the baking soda/vinegar solution described above, below are some other methods that may work to unclog your drain:

The Wire Hanger: After unwinding the neck of a hanger, straighten out the two elbows. On the end opposite the hook, create a handle for you to use. If the hook can’t fit through the drain cover, you may have to remove the cover. Next, lower the wire until you feel some pressure against it. After pushing down and pulling up a few times, pull the wire all the way out of the drain to discover what was causing the clog. We typically don’t recommend this method as the tip of the hanger may scratch or damage a pipe if the tip is jagged or pointy.

The Wet/Dry Vacuum: Create a tight seal over the drain using an old plunger head, and set the vacuum to the wet setting. Then, turn the vacuum onto the highest setting to try to draw the clog up the pipe and into the vacuum.

Dish Detergent: For a clogged toilet, pour a quarter cup of dish detergent into the bowl. Then, pour some boiled water in and get ready to begin plunging!
